Maintaining a clothes steamer ensures consistent steam output, preserves the boiler’s thermal efficiency and helps prevent limescale-related breakdowns. This procedure clearly separates daily operating tasks from periodic technical maintenance.
1. The thermodynamics of limescale: why act before blockage occurs
When water boils at 100 °C, it evaporates as pure gas and leaves its dissolved minerals (calcium and magnesium carbonates) at the bottom of the heating chamber:
- Loss of thermal efficiency: Under repeated heat exposure, minerals precipitate and form a compact layer of calcite. This thermal insulator slows heat transfer from the aluminium to the water, increasing heat-up time.
- Wet steam and spitting: Without sufficient heat energy, the steam loses thermal energy and immediately condenses into liquid water droplets inside the hose.
- Thermal safety devices tripping: Insulated by the limescale layer, the heating element overheats, causing the thermal safety fuses to cut out prematurely.
2. Manufacturer’s water rule: according to your appliance architecture
The service life of your steam generator depends on choosing the correct feed water:
- Continuous low-pressure appliances (GK30 / HG38 / LM44 / LM58 / LS98): Designed with a direct aluminium evaporator, they accept mains tap water provided a mechanical drain is performed daily to remove sediments before they harden.
- Closed-tank high-pressure appliances (G200 to G800, MP900 / G900): Use exclusively demineralized water specially formulated for steam generators (treated water that preserves the electrical conductivity required by the level sensor). Do not use tap water, even in a 50/50 mix: mineral build-up blinds the conductivity sensor, blocks the air-balancing valve (siphoning effect) and causes boiling-water spitting.
3. Level 1 — Daily operation: mechanical draining with clean water
This routine operating procedure requires no chemical product and should be carried out by the staff on duty:
- In stores and intensive professional environments: The boiler and tank must be drained and rinsed with clean water every evening after closing. Emptying the water while it is still warm helps remove suspended minerals before they settle at the bottom of the heating chamber overnight.
- At home (weekly use): Always empty any residual water from the tank and base after each steaming session.
Method: Unplug the appliance, allow it to cool until warm, remove the water tank, open the lower drain screw over a sink or drain, rinse with clean water and close again without overtightening.
4. Level 2 — Periodic maintenance: 14° vinegar descaling procedure
Authorization and workplace safety: In a professional environment, this technical operation must never be assigned to sales staff or untrained personnel. It must be carried out exclusively by a qualified maintenance technician wearing the required personal protective equipment (suitable gloves, safety glasses) to prevent any risk of burns or acid splashes.
When whitish deposits appear or steam output decreases despite regular rinsing:
- Make sure the appliance is switched off, unplugged from the mains and completely cold.
- Prepare a solution of 50% water and 50% 14° white household vinegar (or a technical descaler for steam boilers).
- Pour the solution into the heating circuit.
- Switch the appliance on for 30 seconds only to initiate the chemical reaction while lukewarm, then switch off and unplug immediately.
- Leave the solution to act for 30 minutes at room temperature to dissolve deposits without damaging the alloys or O-rings.
- Drain and neutralizing rinse: Completely drain the acidic solution through the drain outlet. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and repeat the draining process twice consecutively to neutralize any remaining acidity.
Restarting: Direct steam onto a cloth for 1 minute to expel any loosened micro-particles of limescale.
5. Strictly prohibited practices
- Do not use unsuitable aggressive acids: Hydrochloric acid, bleach or coffee-machine descalers attack aluminium alloys and damage sealing gaskets.
- Never boil vinegar continuously: Prolonged heating releases acidic vapours that irritate the respiratory tract and increases the risk of boiling-liquid splashes.
- Do not use scented waters or fabric softeners: Their organic agents carbonize on contact with the heating element and permanently block the steam channels.
- Never clear the nozzles with a metal rod: Risk of altering the outlet diameter and irreversibly scratching the soleplate.
